Basil is an annual, herbaceous, aromatic plant native to India. It is mentioned that basil became popular to Greece after the conquest of India by Alexander the Great, who probably introduced this plant to Greece. It takes its name from the Greek word king and in this case means Jesus Christ. According to the Holy Tradition, the basil had sprouted at the location where the Holy Cross was buried and thanks to its intense aroma, Saint Helen discovered it. Its use in cooking is widespread as it is considered by many to be the "king of herbs". The essential oils of several varieties of basil have made it especially popular in perfumery and aromatherapy, as several studies have shown that it has antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
